I know Texas Hold’em Poker usually gets all the attention but 7-Card Stud is a classic poker game and is worth your time learning. It’s not all that difficult to master the basics. The winner is usually the player with the highest 5-card poker hand from the seven cards dealt.
So how does it work? The initial cards are dealt – three to each player. Two cards are down (called the hole or pocket cards) and one card is face-up (called the door card). Everyone then looks at their hole card. The player with the lowest door card must then put in a small bet (called ‘bring in’) or fold. The next player on, clockwise around the table, can then call by matching the opening bet, raise or fold. Each player then receives a fourth card from the dealer face up (aka fourth street). There is then another round of betting beginning with the player with the highest cards showing. The fifth card is then dealt face-up followed by more betting. Then the sixth card and again more betting. The seventh and final card is dealt face-down and again, you guessed it, followed by another round of betting. This last called is called the ‘river’. The remaining players then enter the showdown with the opener revealing his hole cards. The player who has the best high five-card hand from the seven dealt wins half pot whilst the player with the best low five-card poker wins the other half.
These rules are just the beginning and we’ll take a look at strategy another time soon.
