It seems that Facebook poker is growing rapidly in popularity and there are a reported 15 million users playing on the ‘free to play’ Texas Hold’em application every month! It’s consistently in the top 5 games on Facebook. Since Facebook Poker is becoming more acceptable even amongst the most hardcore and dedicated poker players, this may even pose a threat to business for some of the high ranking online poker rooms. The application brings the creator of the Texas Hold’em application, Zynga, a whopping profit of $100 million per year. In fact, Zynga is one of the biggest social games publishers on Facebook. Last year, Zynga entered into an alliance with the World Series of Poker (WSOP) to attract even more players. It held several ‘shootout’ tournaments and even sponsored two seats for its players in the 2009 WSOP main event. One of them managed to reach day 3 of the main competition. Facebook Poker is probably a nice, unintimidating stepping stone for players who want to get into real online money games but just want to practice against other real players first. If a Facebook player ever won the Main Event I’m sure it would have the same effect that Chris Moneymaker triggered into 2003.
